Our Arizona Trip and Our Second Home

First off, we are not moving to Arizona – at least not yet. We checked a lot of properties out on line, and saw several over our last two visits.

Making a move changes so much in your life that you don’t really think about until it comes down to actually making the decision to move.

You think about all your friends and acquaintances – your social network. This is not easy to replicate or replace. While you will make many new friends, you can’t and won’t replace the “old” ones.

You get used to your routine: your favorite places to eat, your dog groomer, your hair dresser, dentist, doctor, etc. The list goes on. When deciding to move, all of these things come into play. Of course, sometimes you don’t have a choice due to job changes. I moved many times while in the military, and four times after getting married for jobs. It was actually fun when we were younger as we didn’t have so many ties to an area or so much stuff. We’ve lived in Boulder County for almost 18 years now. We won’t walk away from our community.

That’s why we aren’t going to. We finally decided to build a 3,400 sq ft, 3 bed, 3.5 bath home along with a 1,200 sq ft, 2 bed, 2 bath casita on a 2.5 acre property. The house and casita will each have a private driveway, garages, front courtyard and fenced backyard. We envision ourselves using the casita a few months a year while renting the house for a while (5-7 years) as neither of us wants to retire at this time. At some point, we will plan to use the main house part of the year i.e. winter, while renting the casita as a seasonal VRBO. A lot of moving parts, but either way, the property will be bringing in some income while we still get to live there.

So, we begin the process of building a custom home – a first for us. The only bummer with this is that it will probably be the nicest home we’ve ever owned and someone else will get to live in it first.

Going through all this angst while deciding what type of property will suit us the best is a great reminder of what it’s often like for all of you and my clients.

It’s been a good refresher course! So, if you or someone you know are planning a move, give me a call.
